The Port of Long Beach (POLB) handled close to 1 million teu in the month of September a 25% increase year-on-year.

The Californian port handled 997,177 teu in September eclipsing the previous monthly record of 987,191 teu in October 2024. The port credited the record volume number to an inclusion shippers’ cost-saving strategies against high diesel costs, Panama Canal access restrictions and a possible new US – China trade deal.

Imports fuelled September’s throughput at the Port of Long Beach with a 31.3% jump to 509,390 teu compared to the same month in 2025. The surge in imports see the ratio of import to export boxes exceeding 5:1 with the port handling 91,747 teu of exports.

The latest volume figures from the Port of Long Beach underscore that the early arriving peak season on the transpacific trade is also extending later into the year than usual.

“Shippers continue to lean on the Port of Long Beach as a reliable partner in their business strategies, leading to our historic month for cargo,” commented Port of Long Beach CEO Dr. Noel Hacegaba. “Every milestone brings us closer to achieving our long-term goal of doubling cargo volumes to 20 million teu annually by 2050 as we build the Port of the Future.”Year-to-date, the Port of Long Beach has moved 7.68 million teu through September, up 3.9% compared to the same period last year
