JERA has strengthened its indirect participation in the Chevron-operated Wheatstone LNG project by acquiring all shares held by Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) in Pan Pacific Energy (PEJ), the company through which the Japanese heavyweight holds its interests in this Australian LNG project with other shareholders, Mitsubishi Corporation and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line).

With the completion of the transaction done on October 2, 2026, JERA’s ownership interest in PEJ has increased to 50.1%, strengthening its position in the Wheatstone LNG project. The interests held by PE Wheatstone (PEW), a subsidiary of PEJ, remain unchanged at 10% in the upstream gas field development and 8% in the LNG liquefaction project.

The Wheatstone LNG project processes and liquefies natural gas produced from offshore gas fields off the coast of Western Australia at the Ashburton North facility. Since starting production in 2017, the project has contributed to the stable supply of LNG to Japan.

Australia remains strategically important to JERA as a trusted and reliable supplier of LNG, as the company procures approximately 5.2 million tonnes of LNG annually from the project, making it one of the firm’s key LNG supply sources.

The Japanese firm intends to continue to maintain a strong presence in key Australian LNG projects while building a diversified LNG portfolio through balanced procurement from the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East, the United States, and other sources.

Irtiza Sayyed, JERA’s Senior Managing Executive Officer and JERA Global Energy Solutions CEO, commented: “Reliable LNG supply is fundamental to energy security.

“This acquisition supports our strategy of securing stable and competitive LNG supply and will help meet Japan’s energy needs and contribute to energy security across the Asia-Pacific region for years to come.”

The UK energy regulator Ofgem will launch a tender round covering the transmission infrastructure for Ørsted’s 2.9 GW Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm on 21 October.

The competition is estimated to be worth around GBP 3.5 billion (approximately EUR 4 billion), making it the largest Offshore Transmission Owner (OFTO) tender round to date.

The competitive process will seek an owner for the project’s offshore transmission assets, which carry electricity generated by the wind farm to the onshore grid.

Hornsea 3’s offshore transmission system comprises two offshore converter stations, which were installed by September 2026, and offshore export cables, the first of which was laid and pulled ashore at the beginning of this year. The transmission infrastructure also includes onshore cables and a converter station in Norfolk, connecting the wind farm to the national grid.Located around 120 kilometres off the Norfolk coast, Hornsea 3 will comprise 197 Siemens Gamesa 14 MW turbines. Foundation installation began earlier this year, and inter-array cable installation is scheduled to start in October. The project is expected to enter operation in 2027.Ofgem’s previous tender round (Round 13) covered the transmission assets for East Anglia Three, Inch Cape and Dogger Bank C, with a combined estimated value of GBP 3.5 billion. With Round 14 for the Hornsea 3 assets estimated to be worth the same, this will be the largest OFTO competition to date, according to Ofgem.

The post Ofgem to Launch Record Tender as UK Regulator Seeks Owner of Hornsea 3 Offshore Transmission Assets first appeared on Onewave TV.

Conrad Asia Energy has revealed three important achievements for its Mako gas project in the Duyung production sharing contract (Duyung PSC) in the West Natuna Sea, with its subsidiary, West Natuna Exploration Limited (WNEL), as operator of the asset, diligently working together with its partner, PT Nations Natuna Barat, a subsidiary of PT Nations Petroleum, to deliver these milestones.

Among the three new developments is the arrival of the 2002-built Valaris 104 donor rig, which was acquired from Valaris to serve as the Mako production unit, at PaxOcean‘s shipyard in Batam, Indonesia, where it will undergo conversion into a MOPU that will enable the production of Mako gas.

The gas sales agreement (GSA) with PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) for the purchase of 100% of Mako’s gas production is now effective, and the gas-in commissioning of the West Natuna Transportation System (WNTS)-Pemping subsea pipeline, which is part of the delivery route for the Mako gas into Batam, has also been executed safely and smoothly, according to Conrad.

The company elaborates that gas delivered through the WNTS will support gas supply reliability and the electricity system in Batam, where power demand is experiencing strong growth, including from the rapidly expanding data centre sector. Conrad and Nations are actively evaluating opportunities to increase gas supply from the Duyung PSC to meet this growing demand.

The Valaris 104 rig was stacked for several years before Valaris sold it as a donor rig for non-drilling, production purposes, which offered a profitable exit strategy for an asset that was inactive in the drilling market, while providing the Mako project developers with a ready-made structural hull.

The conversion of an existing jack-up rig into a MOPU is perceived to significantly accelerate the timeline to first gas production compared to constructing a new production facility. The donor rig completed its transit through the Strait of Hormuz in September, following extensive planning, regulatory coordination, and operational risk management across multiple jurisdictions.

Peter Botten, Conrad’s Executive Chairman, commented: “The past few weeks have marked an important period of progress for the Mako gas project, with several critical milestones completed and the project continuing to track to first gas in the fourth quarter of 2027 and within budget.

“The successful transit and arrival in Batam of the Valaris 104 donor rig was a significant logistical achievement, requiring detailed planning, extensive regulatory coordination and careful management of the operational risks associated with the route.”

Conrad’s MOPU contractor, PT Duta Marine/PT Pakarti Tirtoagung (Duta Marine), engaged GAC Logistics, a maritime operator with recent successful operational experience in the Strait of Hormuz, together with relevant regional authorities, naval task forces, classification bodies and marine warranty surveyors to enable the transit.

The fabrication of the MOPU topside modules is underway, with a formal first cut ceremony targeted for early November, as the arrival of the rig enables the project to progress into the next phase of physical MOPU conversion and integration.

The Asian company underlines that engineering and procurement for the conductor support frame (CSF) and subsea umbilical, riser and flowline (SURF) packages are progressing on schedule.

Botten added: “The significance of Mako extends beyond the project itself. Batam and the wider Singapore-Johor-Riau region are experiencing strong growth in power demand, including from the rapidly expanding data centre sector, while reliable and competitively priced gas-fired power remains an important part of the region’s energy mix.

“With the Mako gas sales arrangements and infrastructure in place, Conrad, together with our partner, Nations, is well positioned to contribute to the region’s growing energy requirements, and is also assessing opportunities to increase gas supply to Batam from its broader West Natuna portfolio.”

Conrad emphasizes that the Mako development remains on budget and on track for first gas in the fourth quarter of 2027, with fabrication and construction activities now progressing across multiple major project workstreams

Indigenous shipowners have called on major cargo owners, including the Dangote Group, among others, to support local fleet development by offering long-term Contracts of Affreightment for petroleum products, cement, fertiliser and other bulk cargoes.

The shipowners said cargo is the foundation of shipping, and predictable cargo contracts are what make vessel financing and acquisition possible.

The call was made by a former Nigeria Chapter President of the African Shipowners Association and Group Managing Director of Seamate Maritime Integrated Services Limited, Capt. Ladi Olubowale, at a Public-Private Dialogue with CEOs organised by the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping in Lagos recently.

The dialogue, themed ‘Unlocking efficiency in the marine and blue economy value chain’, brought together industry stakeholders, including Mr Edwin Devakumar, Group Vice President of Dangote Group (Oil and Gas), as guest CEO.Olubowale explained that Nigeria’s maritime strategy must move beyond debates about vessel ownership to “creating commercial conditions that make indigenous vessel acquisition bankable

Give credible Nigerian shipowners long-term Contracts of Affreightment, and those contracts become the commercial foundation upon which vessels can be financed, acquired and deployed,” Olubowale said.

Olubowale argued that shipping is capital-intensive and Nigerian owners cannot sustainably acquire large vessels without guaranteed cargo volumes and bankable employment contracts

He said Dangote, with its refinery, cement and fertiliser operations generating huge maritime cargo volumes, is well placed to catalyse local fleet growth by allocating portions of its cargo requirements to qualified indigenous operators under multi-year CoAs.

Such contracts, he noted, would enable Nigerian shipowners to approach banks, development finance institutions, export credit agencies and international financiers with identifiable cargo and predictable revenue.

The post Shipowners urge Dangote to support local fleet first appeared on Onewave TV.

Two South Korean companies, GasEntec and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), are pooling resources to commercialize small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology.

The two companies have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for GasEntec to license SHI’s SAMSUNG Enhanced Nitrogen Split Expansion (SENSE) liquefaction technology for small-scale applications between 50,000 and 1 million tons per annum. The MoU enables the duo to pursue the first commercial licensing of SENSE.

Brian Yoon, Chief Executive Officer of GasEntec, commented: “As global LNG capacity expands, liquefaction technology is entering a new cycle of innovation and diversification.

“Our partnership with SHI brings their proven liquefaction technology to the small-scale segment, backed by our expertise integrating modular LNG systems worldwide, for the first time. Customers will be able to access an integrated platform that enables flexible solutions spanning liquefaction through to downstream delivery.

”SHI developed its SENSE technology to achieve efficiencies in excess of standard natural gas liquefaction processes, featuring a gas expansion process that uses nitrogen and methane as single-component refrigerants, with the entire process operating in a gaseous state, thereby increasing stability and operational convenience. The MoU covers licensing SENSE for small-scale liquefaction, while Samsung Heavy Industries will continue to offer liquefaction technology for larger-volume applications, including floating LNG projects. The collaboration is extending GasEntec’s capabilities midstream into liquefaction.

Youngkyu Ahn, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of SHI, underlined: “Our award-winning SENSE natural gas liquefaction system is the result of nearly a decade of research and development, validated through more than 1,000 hours of demonstration testing.“We are pleased to partner with GasEntec to deliver small-scale applications of our technology, based on their proven ability to deploy innovative LNG technology at scale.”According to GasEntec, small-scale LNG is an active segment as producers and industrial users seek to monetize stranded gas without the capital intensity of large-scale liquefaction trains.

King Frederik X of Denmark has opened the first full-scale CO2 storage site in the EU, led by INEOS Energy, with partners Harbour Energy and the Danish North Sea Fund (Nordsøfonden).Project Greensand was in December 2022 granted an exploration permit for the injection and storage of up to 15,000 tons of CO2 in Nini West over a four-month period. This was followed by a world first on March 8, 2023, with the first-ever injection of CO2 in the North Sea.

INEOS, the day-to-day operator, and its partners reached the final investment decision (FID) in December 2024 to invest in the Greensand Future Project, the first commercial phase of the Greensand project. Then, in December 2025, the Danish Energy Agency issued its first-ever approval for a full-scale CO2 storage facility, clearing the Greensand Future project to store CO2.

His Majesty King Frederik X of Denmark today, September 18, officially opened the first full-scale facility for the permanent storage of CO2 in the EU, with the ceremony at the Port of Esbjerg, marking Greensand’s move into commercial operation.

Mads Gade, CEO of INEOS Energy Europe, said: “Greensand starts with biogenic CO2, but its significance reaches far beyond that first step. We are ready to expand capacity to receive CO2 from industries across Europe. Greensand is open for business, and a new European market for permanent CO2 storage can now begin to take shape.”

Greensand expects to store up to 400,000 tons of CO2 annually in this first commercial phase, scaling toward a potential of up to 4-8 million tons annually at full capacity.

INEOS will source CO2 primarily from Danish biomethane plants. Once captured, CO2 is liquefied, delivered by truck to a dedicated CO2 terminal at Port Esbjerg, shipped aboard Carbon Destroyer 1 – the EU’s first purpose-built CO2 carrier – and injected into the Nini West reservoir, a depleted oil field some 250 kilometers offshore, approximately 1,800 meters beneath the seabed.

“Today marks an important milestone for Europe. With the launch, here in Esbjerg, of the first fully operational site for offshore carbon storage in the European Union, we prove that carbon storage is a practical reality,” said European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen.

“We show that we can move from demonstration to deployment. We set out a path for European industries: to continue their transition to a low-carbon future, while maintaining production, investments, and employment in our continent. And we open a new front in the existential fight against climate change.”

An approval in principle (AiP) from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV), part of Bureau Veritas Group, is paving the way for Belgian shipping company Exmar to breathe life into its floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) concept, which is based on the conversion of an existing membrane-type LNG carrier

Exmar has been awarded AiP by Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore for its FLNG conversion design, which is created to enable offshore gas processing, liquefaction and LNG storage based on a membrane-type LNG carrier with an effective LNG storage capacity of approximately 170,000 cubic meters (cbm) and a design life of 25 years.

David Barrow, SVP for Western Europe and Americas at Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, commented: “Floating liquefaction solutions already play an important role in unlocking offshore gas resources and supporting the development of energy projects in a flexible and cost-effective manner.

“We are pleased to grant approval in principle to Exmar’s FLNG conversion concept, which demonstrates how existing LNG carrier assets can be repurposed to support future offshore developments. This project highlights how collaboration across the industry can drive innovative and practical solutions that combine technical feasibility with project efficiency.”

The concept has been assessed against applicable Bureau Veritas requirements for offshore production gas units. The review focused on the hull structure and stability, the existing LNG cargo containment system, and the FLNG mooring arrangement.

The AiP demonstrates the potential viability of adapting existing membrane LNG carrier assets into floating liquefaction facilities, providing an alternative pathway to develop offshore gas resources while supporting efficient project execution and diversifying energy supply.

The FLNG is intended to unlock stranded gas resources, aiming at projects with low initial capital costs, a shorter timeline from final investment decision (FID) to production, and high efficiency requirements.

Leveraging the conversion of an existing LNG carrier rather than a newbuild vessel is said to allow the concept to offer a practical approach to reducing development schedules and capital investment while providing a flexible solution for offshore gas developments.

The AiP comes over a month after Exmar took delivery of an LNG carrier set to be upgraded to function as a floating transshipment unit (FTU) for the LNG bunkering market
