Hive Hydrogen has announced that its Carissa Wind Energy Facility, located near Beaufort West in the South Africa’s Western Cape Province, has received environmental authorization from South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.
With a planned capacity of up to 1,000 MW and comprising 154 wind turbines, Carissa is now officially the largest permitted wind energy facility in South Africa.The facility will supply renewable power to Hive Hydrogen’s Coega Green Ammonia project in Nelson Mandela Bay. The initiative represents a significant step towards establishing South Africa as a key player in the global green hydrogen economy.With environmental clearance now secured, the project is set to move into the front-end engineering design phase. Construction is targeted to begin in early 2027, with commissioning scheduled for December 2029.
