 Electricity Market Outlook and policy drivers’ storage in Nigeria

Nigeria’s installed about capacity (~13 GW) is far larger than what the system reliably produces; actual generation is often ~1/3 of installed capacity because of gas shortages, grid constraints, vandalism and liquidity/debt problems across the sector. This under-performance keeps reliability low and increases demand for distributed backup and storage. The regulator Like (NERC) and other agencies have been active recently: new Electricity Act provisions, Eligible Customer Regulations (2024), Mini-Grid Regulations (2023), draft Net-Billing/Net-Metering rules (2025), and quarterly/annual NERC reporting —these show a regulatory push toward renewables, metering, and enabling third-party delivery models that open space for storage.

This panel will explore the challenges and opportunities in Electricity Market outlook and policy drivers’ storage in Nigeria through the following questions;

  • Why storage matters for Nigeria as the drivers?
  • How can we manage this Barriers that policy must address?
  • How can we manage Financial / commercial- improved metering and tariff adjustments and recent subsidy cuts?
  • Create clear revenue stacks — enable storage to earn from multiple markets (arbitrage, reserve, frequency response, capacity payments) and allow aggregators/VPPs
