The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has concluded a three-day capacity-building workshop for energy correspondents and media practitioners as part of efforts to strengthen public understanding of Nigeria’s electricity sector and promote accurate, balanced and evidence-based reporting.
The training, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, brought together electricity reporters from across the country for sessions on key regulatory issues, including electricity market reforms, consumer protection, stakeholder engagement and the transition to subnational electricity markets.
The workshop comes as Nigeria’s electricity sector undergoes significant reforms following the enactment of the Electricity Act 2023, which decentralised the electricity market by empowering states to establish and regulate their own electricity markets.
The transition has increased the need for accurate public information to help consumers and stakeholders understand the evolving regulatory framework and ongoing reforms in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.
In a statement it issued on Thursday, the commission said the workshop was designed to improve journalists’ knowledge of regulatory activities and strengthen the quality of reporting on the electricity sector.
The commission noted the workshop, which ran from July 15 to 17, featured technical sessions on emerging developments in the sector.
