The world’s largest LNG-powered container ship, CMA CGM Notre Dame has made its first call at Rotterdam and bunkered its first European-produced bio-LNG. The call on 8 July followed shortly after the ship’s naming ceremony in Le Havre on 2 July. CMA CGM Notre Dame is the largest containership in the French-flagged fleet with a capacity of 24,212 teu, a length of almost 400 metres and a beam of 61 meters. The new delivery is the first in a series of 10 vessels, all of which will sail under the French flag. The ship called at Rotterdam as part of its deployment on the French Asia Line 3 (FAL3) service, which will see the ship call Hamburg, Antwerp, Tanger Med, Port Klang, and Ningbo on the eastbound leg. During its first call at Rotterdam, CMA CGM Notre Dame bunkered bio-LNG produced in Europe from organic waste from the agricultural and agri-food sectors, the Port of Rotterdam said. The greener, renewable fuel reduces lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by at least 67% compared to traditional marine fuels, it said. LNG also has significant benefits in the reductions of SOx, NOx, and particulates.

The bunkering operation was carried out by TotalEnergies’ Gas Agility, a vessel with a history of bunkering record-breaking LNG-powered ships in Rotterdam after supplying CMA CGM Jacques Saade in 2020 when the containership was the world’s largest LNG-fuelled container vessel and Gas Agility was the world’s largest LNG bunkering vessel.

Rotterdam is a major bunkering hub in Europe, supplying 10m tonnes of fuel per year. In 2025, the port bunkered 649,466 tonnes of bio-blended fuel, compared to a total of 9.06m tonnes of fossil fuels. LNG deliveries in 2025 were 992,911 cu m, with just 17,644 cu m of bio-blended LNG.
