Portonave, the private terminal operated by Terminal Investment Limited (TiL) in Navegantes, in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, has received seven electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes (e-RTGs), as part of its expansion to increase capacity to 2m teu, up from 1.5m teu.
The units, which are 28 metres tall and weigh 150 tonnes, are the first of batch of an order for 14 units and are expected to enter service in August. The remaining units are expected to arrive by the end of July, according to TiL
The e-RTGs are manufactured by Konecranes, designed in Finland and built in China. They can lift up to 41 tonnes and handle stacks of up to seven containers high.
The $37.8m new cranes are preparing the terminal for its upcoming transformation through the refurbishment of its quay, which is scheduled for completion in the second half of this year and will enable the terminal to handle vessels up to 400 metres in length.
In total, Portonave’s investment in construction and equipment purchases is more than $360m. When the expansion is completed, the terminal will have 8 ship-to-shore (STS) cranes and 32 RTGs.
The new e-RTGs arrive ready for operation within the terminal yard’s electrification system, powered by batteries. The electrification scheme is expected to reduce pollutant emissions from RTGs by 96.5%.
The electric fleet is set to continue to grow. In the second half of this year, two new STS cranes will arrive and, with phased deliveries continuing until January 2027, 30 electric terminal tractors and five electric reach stackers will come into operation
